Karafuto Shrine

Japanese: 樺太神社 - からふとじんじゃ
Karafuto Shrine
A shrine located in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sakhalin. It was one of the shrines established under State Shinto in Hokkaido, Karafuto, Korea, Taiwan, and other places. When the southern half of Sakhalin came under Japanese control as a result of the Russo-Japanese War, the government decided to establish a shrine in Toyohara City, where the Karafuto Prefectural Government was located, to pray for the protection of the north and for the management of the country, as in the Sapporo Shrine (Hokkaido Shrine) that had been established earlier, to enshrine the deities Okunitama, Onamuchi, and Sukunabikona. In 1910, the new shrine was listed as a Kanpei Taisha (Great Shrine of the Imperial Court), and the following year, an imperial envoy traveled to Toyohara bearing the spirit of the enshrined deity, and a ceremony to enshrine it was held.
