Maurice Merleau‐Ponty

French philosopher who played an important role in connecting the existentialism of the time immediately after World War II with the structuralism that began in the 1960s. In the 1930s, he formed his ideas under the influence of Bergson's philosophy and Husserl's phenomenology, and earned his doctorate for "The Structure of Action" (1942) and "Phenomenology of Perception" (1945). In 1945, he became a lecturer at the University of Lyon, and in 1948, a professor there. In 1949, he was invited to teach psychology and pedagogy at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Paris (Sorbonne), and in 1952, he became a professor at the Collège de France, at an unusually young age for the time.

フランスの哲学者。第2次大戦直後の実存主義と1960年代にはじまる構造主義とをつなぐ重要な役割を果たした。1930年代にベルグソン哲学やフッサールの現象学の影響下にその思想を形成し，《行動の構造》(1942)と《知覚の現象学》(1945)によって学位を取得，45年リヨン大学講師，48年同教授，49年パリ大学文学部(ソルボンヌ)に招かれて心理学と教育学を担当，52年当時としては異例の若さでコレージュ･ド･フランス教授に就任した。
