A mineral that contains uranium. Uranium has an atomic valence of +4 in a reducing environment and +6 in an oxidizing environment. The latter usually becomes the uranyl (UO 2 ) 2+ complex ion, which dissolves easily in water and is transported. For this reason, there are many mineral species that contain uranium, and there are about 140 types of minerals that contain uranium as the main component. The main ore minerals that contain U 4+ include uraninite UO 2 (pitchblende is a variety of this), coffinite U(SiO 4 ) 1− x (OH) 4 x , and brannerite (U,Ca,Th,Y)(Ti,Fe) 2 O 6 , and are generally black to dark brown in color and have a high specific gravity.
