Stockings - Shitouzu

A corrupted form of "shitagutsu" (socks). Since ancient times, it has been used by the nobility when wearing footwear. Unlike tabi (socks), it does not separate the big toe, and is fastened with two strings sewn to the back, with a seam running down the center of the instep and sole. The Yoro Clothing Order stipulated that Nishiki trousers be worn as formal attire, and white trousers as morning attire. For other types of clothing, it was permitted for Shukutoku (elderly men of high virtue) but generally forbidden.

「したぐつ」の訛(なま)り。靴下の意。古代以来、貴族階級で履(くつ)をはくとき用いられた。足袋(たび)と異なり、母指を分けず、甲や底の縦中央を縫い目として、後部に縫い付けられた2本の紐(ひも)で締める。養老(ようろう)の衣服令(りょう)で、礼服に錦(にしき)襪、朝服に白襪を用いると定められた。その他の服装では宿徳（高徳な老人）には許されたが一般に禁じられていた。
