1648-97 (Keian 1-Genroku 10) A haiku poet of the early Edo period. His family name was Kitamura. His given name was Sueyori. He was commonly known as Kyutaro (Kyutaro). His first name was Sueshige. He was the son of Kitamura Kigin. He was born in Yamabushiyamacho, Sanjo, Kyoto. Under his father Kigin's guidance, he became familiar with haiku from an early age, and in 1659 (Manji 2) at the age of 12, he participated in a haiku performance at Kigin's Kokin Denju Kyoen. In 1667 (Kanbun 7), at the young age of 20, he became a master, and with Kigin's support, he compiled Zokuyamanoi to commemorate this. Around 1678 (Enpo 6), he left Kigin's patronage and seemed to have been given the initiative in the haiku world, and he became more active in negotiating with young, spirited haiku poets who were competing to bring a new style to Danrin.
