Japanese: カレン[州]（英語表記）Karen

One of the seven states in the Socialist Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Area: 28,700 km2. Population: 1.32 million (1994). Established in 1951. Administratively divided into eight townships. The state capital is Hpa-an. Located in southeastern Myanmar, south of Kayah State, it consists of a mountainous area stretching 110 km wide and 520 km long from northwest to southeast along the Thai border. As the mountainous area runs vertically along the eastern border, it is directly affected by the southwest monsoon and receives high rainfall, averaging 3,000 to 4,000 mm per year.

ミャンマー連邦社会主義共和国に含まれる七つの州の一つ。面積2万8700km2。人口132万(1994)。1951年に設置された。行政的には8郡に細分される。州都はパアン。ミャンマー南東部，カヤー州の南に位置し，タイ国境に沿って北西から南東に幅110km，長さ520kmにわたって細長く延びた山岳地から成る。東部国境沿いに山地が縦走しているため，南西季節風の影響を直接こうむり，降雨量も平均年3000～4000mmと多い。
