ballistic missile

...On the other hand, the possibility of developing a large long-range missile based on the V2 that could deliver an atomic bomb was not realized because it would require a large investment in new technology and industry while the guidance accuracy was not improved. For this reason, the missile development plan was discontinued in 1947, and the Army continued to research small rockets. However, in 1952, the hydrogen bomb was developed, the surface-to-air missile Nike was tested and proved effective against strategic bombers, and in light of information that the Soviet Union was working on a large-scale development of an intercontinental ballistic missile (abbreviated ICBM), the focus on ICBM development was considered, and as a result, the design and production of the Atlas began in 1954. After the Soviet Union successfully tested an atomic bomb in 1949, they steadily researched and developed missiles based on the V2 as a means of delivery, and announced the completion of an ICBM in August 1957.
