A perennial climbing weed of the Vitaceae family (illustration), commonly found on roadsides, in gardens, and around the edges of fields. Its name "Yabu-kazura" comes from the fact that it grows vigorously and will wither even bushes it entangles, but it is also known as "binbou kazura." The stems are tendrils that grow long and wrap around other things, and are reddish when young. The leaves are alternate and arranged opposite the tendrils, and are compound leaves with five bird's foot-shaped leaflets. The flowers are small, and form cymes that open in July and August. The four green petals fall off when they open, revealing a pale pink disk. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
