After appearing in the mid-1950s with his collection of short stories, Days of Masks, he was recognized as a representative Latin American novelist with his experimental masterpieces, The Place Where the Air is Most Pure (1958), which was inspired by Joyce, Faulkner, and Dos Passos, and The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962), which intertwines the world of personal dreams and death with contemporary Mexican history, centered on the revolution at the beginning of the century. In addition to full-length novels such as Sanctuary and The Detox (both 1967), Our Earth (1975), and Distant Family (1980), he has written many critical essays such as Cervantes, or a Critique of Reading (1976), and plays such as Orchids in the Moonlight (1982). …
