A by-product of the Thomas process steelmaking process, also known as Thomas slag (slag). It is used as a phosphate fertilizer. It is a type of fused phosphate fertilizer in the broad sense that it is produced by the melting process. When calcium oxide (CaO) is added to the phosphorus-containing pig iron melt in the Thomas converter and air is blown in, the phosphorus is oxidized to diphosphorus pentoxide (P ₂ O ₅₎ , which enters the slag together with the CaO. This is poured out and allowed to solidify by slow cooling, then crushed to produce the finished product. It is a dark brown, heavy, crystalline powder that is insoluble in water and soluble in weak acids.

トーマス法製鋼の副産スラグで，トーマス鉱滓（こうさい）(スラグ)とも呼ぶ。リン酸肥料として利用される。溶融法で製造されるという意味では，広義の溶成リン肥の一種である。トーマス転炉中の含リン銑鉄溶融物に酸化カルシウムCaOを加えて空気を吹き込むと，リンが酸化して五酸化二リンP₂O₅となりCaOとともにスラグ中に入る。これを流し出して徐冷固化させたのち粉砕して製品とする。暗褐色の重い結晶性粉末で，水不溶性，弱酸可溶性である。
