...Dutch scholar and doctor of the Edo period. Son of Kaian, physician to Lord Hisamatsu of Matsuyama. His given name was Ei, and his pen names were Shien and Hoko. He first studied classical Chinese and traditional Chinese medicine, which he learned from his family's teachings, and then went to Kyoto, Osaka, and then Edo, where he studied Dutch studies and medicine under Baba Sajuro and Sugita Genpaku. After his father's death, he returned to Matsuyama and inherited the family business, but then traveled to Nagasaki and then Edo to study again, where he became acquainted with Otsuki Gentaku, Udagawa Shinsai (Genshin), Sugita Ryukei, and Udagawa Yoan. In 1822 (Bunsei 5), he became a translator at the Edo shogunate's astronomical observatory, and translated many Dutch books. His translations include Chronicles of the Disasters in Japan, which he translated following on from Baba Sajuro, a Dutch translation of VM Golovnin's diary from his time as a prisoner in Japan; medical books such as Ipei's Treatise on the Nature of Medicine, Horn's Book on Obstetrics, Medical Collection, and Konsburg's Book on Internal Medicine; geography books such as The History of Land and Land and A Summary of the History of Land; and his translations of the Dutch translation of IV Krusenstern's Voyage of the World (The Voyage of the World) (Travels to Japan by Envoys) and Home Equipment (Use for Homes). *Some of the terminology explanations that refer to "Aojiei" are listed below.
