...When people or similar subjects are organized in a pyramidal hierarchy based on a certain principle of value or within a certain system of functions, this refers to the organizational principle and the actual organization that is formed. It is often translated as hierarchy, rank system, or status hierarchy. For example, just as the angels in heaven are divided into three hierarchical positions, the clergy on earth are also divided into hierarchical positions, such as bishop, priest, and deacon in Catholicism and bishop, priest, and deacon in Eastern Orthodoxy.
