A keeper of Ainu lyrics and music, Yukar. Born in Horobetsu Village, Horobetsu County, Hokkaido (now Noboribetsu City). His legal name was Hirochi, and his Ainu name was Imekano. He studied at Airin School, which trains Christian missionaries in Hakodate, and engaged in missionary work in Biratori Town and other places, remaining single his whole life. While following the mission in Chikabumi, Asahikawa City, he also took in his younger sister Nami's daughter, Chiri Yukie (author of Ainu Mythical Songs), and sent her to college. He wrote down the Yukar he had inherited in romanized letters in about 160 notebooks, leaving them to Kindaichi Kyosuke and Chiri Mashiho, Yukie's younger brother, and some of these were published as Ainu Epic Yukar Collection. In 1956 (Showa 31), he was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal.
