Ikitsuki Island

An island located in the north of Hirado Island in the northern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It belongs to Hirado City. Until 2005 (Heisei 17), it was Ikitsuki Town, Kitamatsuura County. It faces Hirado Island across the Tatsuno Seto Strait, but in 1991 (Heisei 3), the two islands were connected by the Ikitsuki Bridge. The area is 16.55 square kilometers. The island's base is Tertiary layers, on which an aspidiscal volcano erupted, and repeated landslides have divided the volcanic body into two, Bandake (286 meters) on the north side and Yamagashira (258 meters) on the south side. The west coast forms a steep cliff, and many columnar joints of basalt can be seen. The eastern bank is gently sloping, and there is a spring at the boundary between the Tertiary layer and the basalt. Along this spring there are settlements and reservoirs, and below that there are rice paddies, but even today it is an area where landslides occur frequently. Population: 7,934 (2000).

長崎県北部、平戸島(ひらどしま)の北方に浮かぶ島。平戸市に属する。2005年（平成17）までは北松浦(きたまつうら)郡生月町をなしていた。辰ノ瀬戸(たつのせと)を隔てて平戸島に相対しているが、1991年（平成3）両島はそこに架橋された生月大橋で結ばれた。面積16.55平方キロメートル。島の基盤は第三紀層で、その上にアスピーテ状火山が噴出し、地すべりの繰り返しによって、火山体は北側の番岳(ばんだけ)（286メートル）と南側の山頭(やまがしら)（258メートル）とに二分されている。西岸は急崖(きゅうがい)をなし、玄武岩の柱状節理が多くみられる。東岸は緩傾斜で、第三紀層と玄武岩の境界には湧水(ゆうすい)があり、この湧水に沿って集落、溜池(ためいけ)があり、それ以下が水田に開かれているが、いまも地すべりの多発地帯をなしている。人口7934（2000）。
