..."Sotsuba Komachi" tells the story of an old beggar woman sitting on a dilapidated stupa who enters the Buddhist path, but the old woman is the remains of a Komachi possessed by the spirit of Fukakusa no Shosho. "Sekidera Komachi" tells the story of a monk from Sekidera who learns of the way of singing from an old Komachi who lives near the temple, and "Otori Komachi" tells the story of the new Dainagon Yukiie visiting an old Komachi near Sekidera. These five pieces, together with "Ame-goshi Komachi" and "Shimizu Komachi", make up the Seven Komachi, and in the Edo period, the Seven Komachi were often used as subjects for Kabuki and Ukiyo-e paintings. ...

…《卒都婆小町》は，朽ちた卒都婆に腰かけた乞食の老女が仏道に入る話であるが，その老女は深草少将の霊にとりつかれた小町のなれの果てであったという筋。また《関寺小町》は，関寺の僧が寺の近くに住む老残の小町から歌の道を聞くという物語であり，《鸚鵡小町》も，新大納言行家が関寺近くに老いた小町を訪ねるという筋になっている。この5曲に《雨乞小町》《清水小町》を加えて七小町といい，江戸時代には七小町が歌舞伎の題材，浮世絵の画題などにしばしばとりあげられた。…
