The country is divided into a narrow western region of mountains and valleys and a broad eastern plateau that slopes gently to the east. In the northwest, the Ansariya Mountains (Jibāl al‐'Arawīyina) run north to south, and its western flank gently descends to the sea, leaving a narrow coastal plain.
