Director. Born in Tokyo. Third son of English scholar Okakura Yoshisaburo. Graduated from Rikkyo University's Department of English Literature in 1931. Joined the Shintsukiji Theater Company while still a student, and was highly praised for directing "Tsuchi" and "Tsurikata Classroom". Left the company in 1965, but was arrested along with other members of the Shintsukiji Theater Company for violating the Peace Preservation Law. Joined Toho in 1968. In 1972, participated in the founding of the Budo no Kai and the People's Art Theater (later the Mingei Theater Company), and played an active role as a central director for both companies, working to establish the Stanislavsky System, and also directed Kabuki, Shinpa, and opera. Received the Mainichi Theater Award in 1974 for directing Kinoshita Junji's "Yuzuru". Posthumously, a collection of essays titled "The Director's Work" (1965) was published.
