A poisonous mushroom of the Basidiomycete family, Agaricaceae, of the order Matsutake. The cap is large and grows to 5-20 cm. The surface is white, but the epidermis in the center splits into large light brown scales. The gills are white at first, but turn gray-green or gray-brown as the spores ripen. The stem is 10-20 cm long, white or light dirty brown, with a double-edged collar at the top. The spore print is dark green. It grows in large colonies on grasslands from summer to autumn. It is distributed in Japan and North and South America. Cases of poisoning in Japan are relatively rare, but there have been cases of poisoning in Kagawa and Tokushima prefectures. The poison is quite strong, and patients can suffer from severe diarrhea and vomiting for several days. There are species similar to the genera Parasolaria and Agaricus, but the gills of the former are white and the gills of the latter are dark purple-brown or black-brown.

担子菌類、マツタケ目ハラタケ科の毒キノコ。傘は5～20センチメートル以上になり、大形。表面は白いが、中心部の表皮は淡茶色の大形鱗片(りんぺん)となって裂ける。ひだは初めは白いが、胞子が熟すにつれて灰緑色ないしは灰褐色になる。茎は10～20センチメートル余りで、白ないしは淡い汚褐色、上のほうに縁が二重になったつばがある。胞子紋は暗緑色。夏から秋にかけて草原に多く群生する。日本と北・南アメリカに分布している。日本での中毒例は比較的まれだが、香川県、徳島県では中毒患者が出ている。毒性はかなり強く、激しい下痢、嘔吐(おうと)で数日間苦しむことがあるという。カラカサタケ属、ハラタケ属に似た種類があるが、前者のひだは白、後者のひだは暗紫褐色ないしは黒褐色である。
