A motorcycle race is a competition that competes in speed and skill. It developed with the spread and improvement of motorcycle performance in the 20th century. In English, it is called a motorcycle race. There are road races held on paved roads, track races that go around paved circuits, motocross (cross-country motorcycle racing) that uses rough terrain, and trials that compete for superiority of driving skills on courses with a variety of terrain. Road races, track races, and motocross are all classified according to engine displacement. The World Road Race Grand Prix, in which top riders from each country compete under the supervision of the International Motorcyclist Federation (FIM), is held around the world, mainly in Europe, and several dozen races are held each year. In Japan, the Motorcycle Federation of Japan (MFJ) was founded in 1963 and holds the All Japan Championship. The Japan Grand Prix is held every year at the Suzuka Circuit as the first round of the World Grand Prix, and the World Endurance 8 Hours Race, also held at Suzuka, is known as the largest motorcycle racing event in Japan. オートバイのスピードと技術を競う競技。20世紀にはいってからのオートバイの普及，性能の向上とともに発展。英語ではモーターサイクル・レースmotorcycle race。一般の舗装道路をコースとして行われるロードレースroad race，舗装されたサーキットを周回するトラックレースtrack race，荒れ地コースを使用したモトクロスmotocross（モーターサイクルによるクロスカントリー），変化に富んだ地形のコースで操縦技術の優劣を競うトライアルtrialなどがある。ロードレース，トラックレース，モトクロスともに排気量別にクラス分けされる。国際モーターサイクリスト連盟（FIM）の統括のもとで各国のトップライダーが競う世界ロードレース・グランプリはヨーロッパを中心に世界をめぐり，年間十数戦行われる。日本でも日本モーターサイクル協会（MFJ）が1963年に設立され，全日本選手権が行われている。また鈴鹿サーキットで毎年日本グランプリが世界グランプリの第一戦として行われるほか，同じく鈴鹿の〈世界耐久８時間レース〉も日本最大のオートバイ競技イベントとして知られる。坂をのぼるヒルクライムなど，他にも多くの競技があるが，とくに米国ではヨーロッパとは異なる独自の発展をとげた。→オートレース
