Bestris - Bestris (English spelling) Gaetano Vestris

Italian dancer. Born in Florence. Studied under L. Dupré, he joined the Paris Opera as a soloist. With his excellent technique, he was called the "god of dance." It is said that he was the first to dance without wearing a mask, which had been a traditional custom, in Medea and Giasson, choreographed by J. G. Nobert. His son, Auguste Vestris (1760-1842), also worked for many years as the first dancer at the Paris Opera, and showed great talent in pirouettes (turns) and leaps. His sister Teresa, brother Angiolo, and grandson Armand were also dancers, and the Vestris family was famous as a family of dancers.

イタリア生まれの舞踊家。フィレンツェに生まれる。L・デュプレに学び、パリ・オペラ座に入団、ソリストとなる。優れたテクニックをもち、「舞踊の神」とよばれた。J・G・ノベール振付けの『メディアとジアソン』で、従来の慣習であった仮面を初めて着けずに踊ったといわれる。息子オーガストAuguste Vestris（1760―1842）もパリ・オペラ座の第一舞踊手として長年活躍、ピルエット（旋回）や跳躍に優れた才能を示した。姉のテレサ、弟アンジオロ、孫のアルマンも舞踊家で、ベストリス家は舞踊家の一族として有名。
