...The theories are diverse, and there is currently no common definition. The main theories in French literature have been presented by Marcel Raymond and Jean Rousset. The former places the Pathétiques by TA d'Aubigné, a Protestant soldier who wrote songs of the glory of martyrdom, the anguish of the soul, the fear and anger of tragedy, and apocalyptic fantasies in a passionate tone during the religious wars of the late 16th century, at the top of Baroque poetry.
