A tourist and resort city facing the Atlantic Ocean in northeastern Florida, USA. Population 11,985 (1980). Founded by the Spanish in 1565, it is the oldest European colonial town in the United States. It was the base of Spanish colonial rule until Florida was ceded to the United States in 1819. Many historical sites remain, including the oldest public school, shops, and residences in the United States, Fort San Marcos (1672), built in the late 17th century, and the former slave market.
