The capital of the Basilicata region in southern Italy. It is also the capital of the province of Potenza. It lies about 135 km southeast of Naples, overlooking the Basento River, and occupies a hill at an altitude of 823 m. In ancient times, it was called Potentia, and occupied the lower lands of the hill, and Roman military roads such as Appia and Popilia passed through it, but it was plundered and damaged by earthquakes, and was moved to a higher position. It was damaged by earthquakes in 1694, 1857, 1910, and in November 1980. It is an agricultural distribution center and a representative city in southern Italy. Food, lumber, and brick industries are active. There is a cathedral rebuilt in the 18th century and an ancient museum. Population: 65,603 (1991 estimate).
