Propyl alcohol

1-propanol. C 3 H 8 O(60.10). CH 3 CH 2 CH 2 OH. Sometimes used to refer to aliphatic saturated alcohols with three carbon atoms, but 1-propanol, which has a hydroxyl group at the terminal carbon, is the term used. Also called n -propanol. A few percent of fusel oil contains it. In the laboratory, it is obtained by reacting ethylmagnesium chloride with trioxymethylene. In industry, it is either distilled from fusel oil or synthesized by hydrogenating propionaldehyde, which is obtained by oxo synthesis from ethene, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen. It is also obtained as a by-product in the synthesis of methanol. A colorless liquid with an odor similar to ethanol. Melting point -126.2 °C, boiling point 97.21 °C. 0.79948. 1.38355. Explosive range 2.1-13.5% by volume. Easily soluble in water, ethanol, and ether. Used as a solvent for paints, printing inks, etc. [CAS 71-23-8][See other terms] Isopropyl alcohol
