A Latin American Indian tribe living in central Chile and parts of Argentina. They are divided into three regional groups: the Pikunche, the Mapuche, and the Huiliche. The Araucanos of Argentina are thought to have migrated from Chile across the Andes, and the relationship between the two groups remains to this day. They were once a nomadic people whose main occupations were gathering and hunting, but they shifted to corn farming under the influence of the Inca civilization. Although part of their territory was conquered by the Inca Empire, they resisted the invasion of the Spanish army for a long time from the 16th century onwards, and became known as an invincible people due to Ercilla y Zúñiga's poem "La Araucana."
