[History]
Japan's beer industry began in the Meiji era. The first beer company was Spring Valley Brewery, founded in Yokohama in 1869 (Meiji 2) by American W. Copeland (1832-1902), and sold its beer under the name Amanuma Beer Sake. In 1876, the Hokkaido Colonization Office built a brewery in Sapporo (the precursor to Sapporo Beer).
