A former town in Soo County in eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. Most of the town is a hilly Shirasu plateau. Livestock farming, including beef cattle and pig farming, is thriving, and vegetable cultivation is also practiced. The main settlement, Iwakawa, is the administrative center of the county, and there are also factories producing shochu and textiles. In July 2005, it merged with Takarabe Town and Sueyoshi Town in Soo County to become a city, Soo City. Area: 145.58 km2 . Population: 13,391 (2003). 鹿児島県東部,曾於(そお)郡の旧町。大部分が丘陵性のシラス台地。肉牛,養豚などの畜産が盛んで,野菜栽培も行う。主集落岩川は郡の行政中心で,焼酎(しょうちゅう),繊維などの工場もある。2005年7月曾於郡財部町,末吉町と合併し市制,曽於市となる。145.58km2。1万3391人(2003)。
