A type of gymnosperm (conifer) that flourished in the Mesozoic era. Unlike the needles of normal cones, the leaves are broad, ovate or lanceolate, simple, short-stalked, and parallel-veined. The veins branch only at the base and converge toward the tip. The cone-shaped fossil Cycadocarpidium is always found in association with the leaves of Podozamites, so it is speculated that it may be the reproductive organ of Podozamites, but this has not been confirmed. In Japan, they are abundant in the Triassic system of Tsufuta, Sanyo-Onoda City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Omine Town, Mine City, and Nariwa Town, Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, the Jurassic system of Iwamuro, Shirasawa Town, Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, and Kuruma, Otari Village, Kitaazumi County, Nagano Prefecture, and the Cretaceous system of Niigata Prefecture, Ishikawa Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture. The name Podozamites is widely used for fossils with similar leaf shapes from the Mesozoic era, so the relationship of many of them is unclear. Many are said to be related to the Podocarpaceae family, but some found in the Southern Hemisphere are related to Wollemia , a new genus of the Araucariaceae family discovered in New South Wales, Australia in 1996.
