A type of sleeveless undergarment for women. It is short and reaches the waist, and is worn over a corset, with outerwear on top. The word derives from the Latin camisia, meaning linen undergarment, and is a demonstrative form of the Spanish camisa, camisola. In the 17th century, it was also called a corset cover in English. In the past, it covered the shoulders, but later it was cut horizontally above the chest and was worn hanging from shoulder straps. This type of neckline is called a camisole neckline and is used for evening gowns. It can also refer to a waist-length jacket worn over a woman's nightgown, or a man's sleeved jersey indoor dress.
