This is one of the representative local books of the Edo period. The author was Oishi Hisataka (Ijuro). It was published in 1794 (Kansei 6). Hisataka was from Kurume, Chikugo Province (Fukuoka Prefecture), and was employed by the Takasaki Domain in 1783 (Tenmei 3) at the age of 59. He later became the domain's county magistrate, and in 1791 (Kansei 3) he began writing this book at the order of the domain's lord, Matsudaira Teruyasu. He completed 11 of the planned 16 volumes, but the remaining 5 were left unfinished due to his death in 1794. The contents of this book cover a wide range of agricultural and civil administration, including rice paddy and tax systems, construction regulations, and weights and measures. This book systematically describes the practical aspects of village governance, and is one of the most excellent local texts from the Edo period, along with the Minminshoyo. Various versions remain in circulation to this day, but they can be broadly divided into three types: (1) the "handwritten copy of the circulated version" owned by the Tokugawa Forestry History Research Institute and Waseda University, (2) the "Tojo version" revised and supplemented by Tojo Ko (Kindai) at the request of the senior councilor Mizuno Tadakuni, and (3) the "Okura version" revised by a man named Okura Nori from Nanso and published in 1866 (Keio 2). There are slight differences in the titles and number of topics, the presence or absence of furigana, etc. It is included in Volume 43 of the "Japanese Economic Encyclopedia" edited by Takimoto Seiichi, and Volume 31 of the "Japanese Economic Collection" edited by the same editor.
