Japanese: オトヒメエビ(乙姫蝦) - オトヒメエビ(英語表記)banded coral shrimp
Banded coral shrimp
This beautiful shrimp (illustration) belongs to the family Hylobatidae of Crustacea. It has a white background with one deep red horizontal stripe on the cephalothorax, one on the third abdominal segment, the fifth and sixth abdominal segments, one on the long segment and arm segment of the third thoracic leg, and two on the palm. It is 5 cm long. The whole body is densely covered with sharp spines, and the antennae are remarkably long and white. The first three pairs of thoracic legs have claws, and the third leg is particularly large. It is distributed in the western Pacific Ocean south of the Boso Peninsula, the Indian Ocean, and the West Indies in the western Atlantic, and lives in shallow waters and coral reefs on rocky coasts. When large fish such as groupers and moray eels approach, it climbs on their surface and sometimes even enters their mouths to remove external parasites.
