The capital of the state of Alagoas in northeastern Brazil. It is a port city on the easternmost coast of South America, about 200 km south-southwest of Recife. The city spreads out on a low-lying promontory between the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the shallow Lagoon del Norte to the west. It was founded in 1815. The city's main industry is manufacturing, with factories producing textiles, sugar, distilled spirits, soap, and rum. The port of Jaragua, which borders the city to the east, is protected from the open sea by a reef, but the water is shallow, so large ocean-going ships anchor outside the reef. It is home to the Federal University of Alagoas (1961). It is connected to coastal and inland cities by rail and road. Population: 628,209 (estimated 1991).
