Toyama clan

Japanese: 遠山氏 - とおやまうじ

A warrior family of Mino in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Periods. It began when Kato Kagetsune was given the position of land steward of Toyama Manor in Mino by Minamoto no Yoritomo as a reward for his achievements, and his son Kagetomo took the name Toyama from Iwamura within the manor. Toyama Manor is a vast estate that covers almost the entirety of Ena County in Gifu Prefecture and the area around Magome in Kiso. With Kagetomo as the head family, the clan divided up the manor and eventually became a famous clan in Mino on par with the Toki clan. In the Muromachi period, some of them became servants of the Shogunate. They split into seven branches, and were overwhelmed by both the Oda and Takeda forces during the Sengoku period. Toyama Tomomasa lost his ancestral Naegi Castle to Mori Nagayoshi in 1583 (Tensho 11), but was given Naegi Castle with a stipend of 10,500 koku in 1600 (Keicho 5) as a reward for his achievements at Sekigahara, and it became the Naegi Domain until the Meiji Restoration.

美濃の中･近世の武家。加藤景廉が源頼朝より勲功賞として美濃遠山荘地頭職を与えられ，その子景朝が荘内岩村に拠って遠山を称したのに始まる。遠山荘はほぼ現在の岐阜県恵那郡全域，および木曾馬籠辺に及ぶ広大な荘園である。景朝を本宗として一族が荘内を分領し，やがて土岐氏と並ぶ美濃の名族となった。室町時代には将軍家奉公衆となる者が輩出した。7流に分かれ，戦国の争乱には織田･武田両勢力に圧せられた。遠山友政は1583年(天正11)森長可に父祖伝来の苗木城を奪われたが，関ヶ原の功賞として1600年(慶長5)苗木城1万500石余を与えられ，以後苗木藩として明治維新に至る。
