...There are many other forms of traditional folk song, including the wedding procession song patinada, but the wailing song called mirolóyia, sung by women for the dead, is considered to be one of the oldest traditions. In Thrace and the Aegean islands closer to Turkey, a Turkish-style lamentative vocal music called amané (with Greek lyrics) has been handed down. The connection between the modes of Greek folk song and those of Byzantine chant has been pointed out, but in addition to the semitoneless pentatonic and heptatonic scales (Re mode), there are two modes that include semitones and augmented second, which may be influenced by Turkish maqam.
