Today, the only palace of this type that remains is the main part of the Ninomaru Palace of Nijo Castle, built before the Kan'ei Imperial Visit (1626). The Tenshu of Azuchi Castle was built by Atsuta carpenters from Owari, and that of Osaka Castle was built by Horyuji carpenters, but carpenters from various places, such as Kyoto, Omi, Sakai, and Kishu, who had been involved in excellent construction since the Middle Ages, competed with each other in the construction of castles.

In 1616 (Genwa 2), the year after the Summer Siege of Osaka, the shogunate issued the One Castle Per Province Order, which forced feudal lords to obtain permission to demolish or repair castles other than their residence castles.

…今日この種の御殿で現存しているのは，寛永御幸(1626)前の建物である二条城二の丸御殿の主要部だけである。　安土城天主を手がけたのは尾張の熱田大工，大坂城は法隆寺大工であったが，ほかに京都，近江，堺，紀州など，中世からすぐれた建築に携わってきた各地の大工が，城の建築に腕を競った。
