A common Indian and Muslim literature, developed with the medium of Urdu as Islamic dynasties expanded their territories. The 18th century to the first half of the 19th century was the golden age of classical Urdu poetry, and prose literature became popular from the 19th century. The Progressive Writers of India Association (established in London in 1935, with its first annual conference held in Lucknow the following year) which promoted the progressive literary movement in Indian literature, was founded mainly by Urdu writers. After India and Pakistan were partitioned into independent states in 1947, the center of Urdu literature shifted from Delhi and Lucknow to Karachi and Lahore in Pakistan. Short stories and poetry, including lyric poems, are the mainstream. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
