Sadatake Ise

Japanese:
Sadatake Ise

A family of the late Edo period. He marked a period in particular in the study of samurai traditions. He was a shogunate official. He was known as Heizo, and his given names were Teijo, Anzai, and Ginkei. Since the Muromachi Shogunate, the Ise clan, along with the Ogasawara and Imagawa clans, have been involved in samurai ceremonies and traditional customs, and this tradition was called the Ise style. Sadamasu's father, Sadamasu, inherited a family stipend of 1,000 koku, and in 1717 (the second year of the Kyoho era), he prepared 52 copies and 63 volumes of the family's traditional texts for inspection by the 8th Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, but died in 1725 at the young age of 33, and his successor, his older brother Sadanobu, also died at the early age of 13, and the family line was tragically cut off. In August of the following year (1803), by special decree, 10-year-old Sadatake was allowed to succeed the family name, but his family stipend was drastically reduced to just 300 koku.

This unrest and decline in the knowledge of the head family accelerated the decline of the Ise school, which had already been overwhelmed by the Ogasawara school since around the Genroku period (1688-1704), but this only increased the family's expectations of the young and talented Sadatake. Sadatake was a man of great learning and knowledge, having read through the abundant family books and well versed in the traditions of the imperial court and the military, and in 1745 (Enkyo 2) he was ranked as a guard in the Okosho group, raising the family's name. He continued to dedicate himself to research, and his writings, covering subjects such as the samurai system, symbols, archery and horseback riding, weapons and equipment, and clothing, number in excess of 300 copies. Among his most famous works are "Teijo Miscellaneous Notes," "Anzai Essays," "Anzai Miscellaneous Notes," "Anzai Novels," "Weapons Research," "One Hundred Poems on Military Weapons," "Military Records," "Seasonal Flowers," "Personal Notes," "Ise Archery and Horse Studies Series," and "Ise Heizo Family Precepts."
