Housman, Alfred Edward
Born 26 March 1859 at Fockbury, Worcestershire
[Died] April 30, 1936. British classical scholar and poet from Cambridge. After failing the graduation exam for the Department of Classics at Oxford University, he became a clerk at the Patent Office. For the next 11 years, he studied independently at night in the library of the British Museum, achieving his academic achievements, and was appointed professor of Latin literature at University College London and Cambridge University. He was recognized as a first-class scholar for completing the definitive edition of Manilius' Astronomica and for editing the texts of Juvenal and Lucan. On the other hand, the more than 150 poems collected in A Shropshire Lad (1896), Last Poems (1922), and More Poems (36) established his status as a unique poet of the fin de siècle and Georgian period, and he was also regarded as a poetic critic for works such as The Name and Nature of Poetry (33).

[Died] August 6, 1986. Bremen German poet and novelist. Injured in World War I. Studied in Munich and Heidelberg, and worked as a merchant and journalist before entering literary activity. At first he was pessimistic and tended towards nihilism, but gradually he was influenced by Kierkegaard and K. Barth and shifted to a style with a strong religious color. He was influenced by poets such as Eichendorff and Storm. He is also famous for introducing Japanese tanka poems that he translated freely. His works include the boy's adventure novel Abel mit der Mundharmonika (1932), the poetry collection Irrsal der Liebe (The Labyrinth of Love) (60), and Der golddurchwirkte Schleier (The Veil Woven with Gold Threads) (83).

[died] 20th February 1959, Glastonbury, Somerset. British author and illustrator. Brother of A.E. Housman. After receiving favorable reviews for his anonymous An English Woman's Love Letters (1900), he produced many plays, such as Prunella (06) and Little Plays of St. Francis (22), and satirical novels, such as Trimblerigg (24). He is also famous for his illustrations for C. Rossetti's Fair and other works.

Hausmann, Raoul

Born: July 12, 1886 in Vienna
[Died] February 1, 1971. Limoges. Austrian painter and photographer. After studying at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, he was active as an illustrator and art critic. In 1918, together with G. Gross, J. Badel, and H. Richter, he started the Dada movement in Berlin and played a central role in it. In 1919, he founded the magazine Der Dada and also began photomontage. In 1923, he gave up oil painting and devoted himself mainly to photography. In 1933, he went into exile in France, moving around the country until his death.

ドイツの詩人,小説家。第1次世界大戦で負傷。ミュンヘン,ハイデルベルクで学び,商人,ジャーナリストを経て文学活動に入った。初めは厭世的で,ニヒリズムの傾向が強かったが,次第にキルケゴールや K.バルトの影響を受けて宗教色の濃い作風に移行。詩人ではアイヘンドルフやシュトルムの影響を受けた。日本の短歌を自由訳して紹介したことでも有名。少年冒険小説『ハーモニカを持ったアベル少年』 Abel mit der Mundharmonika (1932) ,詩集『愛の迷路』 Irrsal der Liebe (60) ,『金糸の織込まれたベール』 Der golddurchwirkte Schleier (83) など。

オーストリアの画家,写真家。ベルリン美術学校で学んだのちイラストレーター,美術評論家として活躍。 1918年 G.グロッス,J.バーデル,H.リヒターらとベルリンでダダの運動を起し,その中心的役割をになった。 19年雑誌『デア・ダダ』を創刊,またフォトモンタージュを始めた。 23年油絵を放棄し主として写真に専念。 33年フランスに亡命し,没するまでフランス各地を転々とした。
