Canadian canoe

A type of canoe. A boat carved out of birch and used by indigenous peoples in Canada to connect lakes and rivers, or for hunting. It is easy to transport and can be used easily on a wide range of water surfaces, so it is still used today for a wide range of purposes, including hunting, leisure, and sports. It is rowed by pushing the water from front to back with a paddle (a small oar) that has a blade on one side. Unlike a boat, it is rowed facing the direction of travel, and is usually rowed with the knees up. Boats are often made of wood or duralumin, but boats made of reinforced plastic are becoming more common.

カヌーの一種。カナダの先住民たちが湖沼や川の連絡用に、あるいは狩猟用に、樺(かば)の木をくりぬいて使っていた舟。持ち運びが簡単で、広範囲の水面で手軽に使用できるので、現在でも狩猟用、レジャー用、スポーツ用など多方面で利用されている。こぎ方は、片方にブレード（水かき）のついたパドル（小さな櫂(かい)）で、水を前から後方へ押しやるようにしてこぎ進める。ボートと違って、進行方向を向いて乗り、普通は立て膝(ひざ)の姿勢でこぐ。舟の材料は木やジュラルミンが多いが、強化プラスチック製の舟が増えてきている。
