Vibration sense

Japanese: 振動覚 - しんどうかく（英語表記）vibration sense

It is a type of mechanical sense that is caused by vibration stimuli from an object. If vibrations on the floor are caused by stimulating a distant location, they can be used as a remote sensation, and so vibratory sense is used by many animals for alert behavior. For example, if a running cockroach vibrates the floor, it will stop or fly away. Some insects communicate with each other by vibrating the floor or the stems of plants. The vibratory sensory organs of insects are the kneecaps on the legs. The kneecaps of cockroaches are highly sensitive to vibrations with frequencies between 1 and 4 kHz, and can sense vibrations with an amplitude of ^10-9 cm (1.5 kHz).

物体の振動刺激で起こる感覚で，機械感覚の一種である。床の振動が遠い所を刺激して生じた場合には遠隔感覚として利用できるので，振動覚は多くの動物で警戒行動に利用される。例えば，走っているゴキブリは床を振動させると止まったり，飛んで逃げたりする。あるいは，昆虫類には床や植物の茎を振動させて雌雄間で交信するものもある。昆虫の振動感覚器は足にある膝下（しつか）器官である。ゴキブリの膝下器官は振動数1～4kHzの振動にひじょうに敏感で，振幅10^－9cm(1.5kHz)の振動に感じる。
