French composer. Born in Paris to the German composer L. Adam (1758-1848) of Alsace, he was recognized by the composer Boieldieu at the Paris Conservatoire. After achieving success with operas such as The Coachman of Longjumeau (1836), he released Giselle (1841), a masterpiece of romantic ballet. A prolific composer, he left behind 39 operas and 14 ballet scores.
