Sponge iron

Japanese: 海綿鉄 - かいめんてつ（英語表記）sponge iron

This refers to a porous lump of iron obtained by low-temperature reduction of high-quality iron oxide _ore _Fe2O3 , with the oxygen removed leaving holes. Since it does not melt, it absorbs little carbon and sulfur and has high iron purity. High-purity carbon powder, carbon monoxide gas, water gas, natural gas, hydrogen, etc. are used as reducing agents, and the reduction temperature is usually 900-1100°C, and rotary kilns, shaft furnaces, and retort furnaces are used. Applications include special alloy steel raw material and pure iron powder for sintering (for electromagnet cores) (→ Pure iron).

高品位の酸化鉄鉱石 Fe₂O₃ を低温還元して得られ，酸素の抜けたところが空になった多孔質の塊状鉄をいう。溶融にいたらないため炭素，硫黄の吸収が少く鉄純度が高い。還元剤には高純度の炭素粉，一酸化炭素ガス，水性ガス，天然ガス，水素などが用いられ，還元温度は通常 900～1100℃，炉は回転円筒窯 (ロータリーキルン) ，シャフト炉，レトルト炉が用いられる。用途は特殊合金鋼原料，焼結用純鉄粉 (電磁石磁心用) 原料などである (→純鉄 ) 。
