1882‐1953
An illustrator born in Toulouse, France. He worked mainly in England and became a naturalized citizen in 1912. He first became famous for his fantastical illustrations for "Arabian Nights" (1907), and later painted subjects such as "The Tempest" (1908) and "Sleeping Beauty" (1910), and eventually became attracted to the style of Oriental painting. In his later years, he also designed postage stamps for both Britain and France, and, together with Rackham, was considered a representative artist in the illustrated book world of the early 20th century, known as the "Golden Age of Illustration."

フランスのトゥールーズに生まれた挿絵画家。主としてイギリスで制作活動を行い，1912年に帰化している。《アラビアン･ナイト》(1907)の幻想的な挿絵で一躍名を知られ，以後は《テンペスト》(1908)，《眠れる森の美女》(1910)などの題材に絵筆をふるい，やがて東洋画のスタイルにもひかれていった。晩年は英仏両国の切手のデザインをも手がけ，ラッカムとともに〈挿絵黄金期〉と呼ばれる20世紀初頭の挿絵本界における代表的画家とみなされた。
