The first Duke of Normandy (reigned 911-927). He was also called Count of Rouen. A leader of the Vikings in Norway. He ravaged the North Sea coast of England, Friesland, and northern France, then headed for the mouth of the Seine River, and in 890 invaded the County of Bayeux and married the daughter of the County's son. The following year he plundered Lisieux, and the year after that he besieged Paris, and then settled in Rouen. Here, in 911, the West Frankish King Charles III (the Simple) and Rollo concluded a treaty in which Rollo would give him part of Neustria (Eastern Normandy), which had been occupied by the Normans, in exchange for Rollo's refusal to plunder any more. After that, Rollo expanded his territory through conquest, and in 922 he acquired Middle Normandy from Raoul, King of the Robert family of France, and established the foundation of his duchy. His personality and life are full of mysteries, and many different theories are mixed together.
