Amano Torin

Year of death: December 9, 4th year of Kyoho (January 18, 1720)
Year of birth: Unknown, haiku poet of the early Edo period. He died at the age of 70 or so. Alternative names include Taihakudo. He was from Ueno, Iga Province (Mie Prefecture). According to Kagami Shiko, he was a cousin of Matsuo Basho. He himself said that he lived in Osaka for about 15 years, "avoiding profit and becoming a vagabond." He then went to Edo, and after turning 40, with Basho's support, he became an independent haiku poet. Basho, who had feared for his future, died in 1694 (Genroku 7), and after losing his backing, he gradually fell into poverty and lived a miserable life in his later years. 江戸前期の俳人。享年は70歳余か。別号は太白堂など。伊賀国(三重県)上野の人。各務支考の言によれば松尾芭蕉の従弟だという。15年ほど大坂で「利をいとひ遊民となつて」暮らしていたと自ら語っている。その後江戸へ出て,40歳を過ぎてから芭蕉の援助を得て俳諧師として独立した。その将来を危惧していた芭蕉が元禄7(1694)年に没し,後ろ盾を失ってからは次第に零落,晩年は惨めな暮らしであった。好色本作家の桃林堂蝶麿と同一人物であるとする説がある。<参考文献>荻野清『俳文学叢説』
