A town in Ashigarashimo County in southwest Kanagawa Prefecture. It occupies the entire Hakone volcanic area collectively known as Hakone, and is one of Japan's leading tourist towns, forming part of the Hakone region of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The town is centered around Hakone-Yumoto Onsen, which is served by the Hakone Tozan Railway, and the former Hakone-machi area on the south shore of Lake Ashi, and the two areas are connected by National Route 1.
