A town in Ashigarashimo County in southwest Kanagawa Prefecture. It occupies the entire Hakone volcanic area collectively known as Hakone, and is one of Japan's leading tourist towns, forming part of the Hakone region of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. The town is centered around Hakone-Yumoto Onsen, which is served by the Hakone Tozan Railway, and the former Hakone-machi area on the south shore of Lake Ashi, and the two areas are connected by National Route 1. 神奈川県南西部，足柄下(あしがらしも)郡の町。箱根と総称される箱根火山域全体を占め，富士箱根伊豆国立公園箱根地区をなす日本有数の観光の町。箱根登山鉄道が通じる箱根湯本温泉，芦ノ湖南岸の旧箱根町地区が中心で，両地区は国道１号線で結ばれる。箱根峠，箱根神社がある。92.86km2。１万3853人（2010）。
