A German literary movement from the late 1760s to the mid-1780s. Its name comes from Klinger's play of the same name. It was also called the "Age of Genius" and translated into Japanese as "The Storm and the Raging Waves." It was an artistic revolutionary movement that aimed to revise the Enlightenment, which emphasized a rational worldview and formal order, based on new emotions and life experiences. Influenced by E. Young's theory of genius, which emphasized the originality of sensitive individuality, and Rousseau's theory of civilization, which advocated a return to nature, Shakespeare and Ossian were his literary models.
