Karelian Isthmus (English spelling) Karel'skiy Peresheek

An isthmus in the western part of the Russian Federation, between the Gulf of Finland and Lake Ladoga at the head of the Baltic Sea. It is about 150 km long, 110 km wide in the north and 45 km wide in the south. It is a low, undulating alluvial plateau with an elevation of about 50 meters, but reaches 179 meters north of St. Petersburg. It is mainly made of gneiss and has been severely eroded by ice. There are extensive coniferous forests and numerous swamps. The Neva River crosses the southern end and is used as part of the White Sea-Baltic Canal, with St. Petersburg located at its mouth.

The isthmus was an important defense line for the city and was the site of fierce fighting during the Soviet-Finnish War (1939-40) and World War II. The port of Vyborg (Gulf of Finland) lies at the northwestern end of the isthmus, and the port of Priozersk (Lake Ladoga) at the northeastern end.

ロシア連邦西部、バルト海奥のフィンランド湾とラドガ湖との間にある地峡。長さ約150キロメートル、幅は北部で110キロメートル、南部で45キロメートル。波状の低い洪積台地が続き、標高は約50メートルであるが、サンクト・ペテルブルグの北では179メートルに達する。主として片麻(へんま)岩からなり、著しい氷食を受けている。針葉樹林帯が広がり、沼沢が数多くある。南端をネバ川が横切り、白海バルト海運河の一部として利用され、その河口にサンクト・ペテルブルグが位置する。

　地峡は同市の重要な防衛線で、ソビエト・フィンランド戦争（1939～40）や第二次世界大戦中の激戦地となった。地峡北西端にビボルグ港（フィンランド湾）、北東端にプリオゼルスク港（ラドガ湖）がある。
