A general term for social paper wasps in the genus Polistes of the family Vespidae in the order Hymenoptera. They form small colonies of less than 100 worker wasps. They are common in human settlements, but sometimes cause skin stings. They are 10-25mm long, slender, black with yellow or reddish brown markings on various parts of their body. There is no morphological difference between queen bees and worker wasps. They are widely distributed throughout the world, except in the cold regions and high mountains, and there are over 100 species. Seven species are known from Japan. Species commonly seen in human settlements include P. chinensis (illustration), P. jadwigae , and P. snelleni .

膜翅目スズメバチ科アシナガバチ属Polistesに含まれる社会性カリウドバチの総称。働きバチが100匹以下の小さな群れをつくる。人里にも多くなじみ深いが，ときに皮膚を刺される被害が出る。体長10～25mm，体は細長く，黒色で各部に黄色や赤褐色の斑紋がある。女王バチと働きバチの形態差はない。寒帯や高山を除く全世界に広く分布し，百数十種。日本からは7種が知られている。人里でふつうに見られる種にフタモンアシナガバチP.chinensis（イラスト），セグロアシナガバチP.jadwigae，コアシナガバチP.snelleniがある。
