The capital of Chernivtsi Oblast in Ukraine. It is located at the northern foot of the Carpathian Mountains near the border with Romania, along the upper reaches of the Prut River. Until 1944 it was called Chernovitsï. Population 241,000 (2001). It has been recorded since at least 1408, and churches from the 17th and 18th centuries remain. It is a center of rail transport. There are factories producing electronic equipment, textiles, sewing, leather, etc., and agricultural products such as meat, oils and fats, and refined sugar (sugar beet sugar) are also actively processed.
