Chernivtsi - Chernivtsi (English spelling) Черновцы/Chernovtsï

The capital of Chernivtsi Oblast in Ukraine. It is located at the northern foot of the Carpathian Mountains near the border with Romania, along the upper reaches of the Prut River. Until 1944 it was called Chernovitsï. Population 241,000 (2001). It has been recorded since at least 1408, and churches from the 17th and 18th centuries remain. It is a center of rail transport. There are factories producing electronic equipment, textiles, sewing, leather, etc., and agricultural products such as meat, oils and fats, and refined sugar (sugar beet sugar) are also actively processed. There is a university founded in 1875 and a museum of ethno-architecture.

ウクライナのチェルノフツィ州の州都。ルーマニアとの国境に近いカルパティア山脈北麓(ほくろく)に位置し、プルート川上流に沿う。1944年までチェルノビツィЧерновицы／Chernovitsïと称した。人口24万1000（2001）。少なくとも1408年から記録に記され、17～18世紀の教会が残る。鉄道交通の中心地。電子機器、織物、縫製、皮革などの工場があり、食肉、油脂、精糖（テンサイ糖）などの農産物加工も盛ん。1875年創立の大学、民族建築博物館がある。
